My only way out that I can see is by going self employed mainly so that I can be at home for my daughter but also just to get out of the benefits trap that so many single parents are forced into. I have also done my sums and will take it slowly working 16 hours a week and paying myself the minimum wage and with extra help from tax credits and some part payment towards rent and council tax I should hopefully be around a £100 a week better off. Sounds good in theory just have to see how it works out in reality.. I am determined never to have to sign on again as the system is so wrong and degrading... I say go for it, take a risk its the only way. Good luck. Hi

I am a crossroads at the moment, I am about to be made redundant, my son has just started school and I have wanted to be self employed for many years. My employer has me on a fixed term contract until Christmas. This will give me time to write my business plan.....I'm so scared. Like you I am in between. I don't get much help now because of my income and I wont get much help if I go self employed. would love to know more about you business. Is there more info on your blog? Not been easy but defiantly the best choice I have ever made. I gave up with the job centre, as you say they are no help and most the time aren't in the real world or have the best advice. The biggest thing that held me back was the 'what if'. For me I had to know worse case scenarios. An excel sheet, some time and running various scenarios through on http://www.turn2us.org.uk/ which use to be Entitled To really helped.
