Its That Time of Year Again
For me there are two signals that I need to be starting on the vegetable patch. First good old Monty is back on the TV screens with Gardeners World. I drool in envy as he potters about in never ending garden. He even makes digging look effortless with not a bead of sweet to be seen. And I swear he has never had a weed in his garden. The other signal is spotting my elderly neighbours gardening gear on the washing line, all cleaned ready for the season. This is followed a few days later by him also pottering in his garden next to mine. His, like mine, is more postage stamp than acreage but still his is perfectly kept. Not a weed in sight and flowers start to bloom in carefully themed colours.

Today wasn’t very productive in the garden. I trying to keep out of the way today whilst the builders were fitting new fascias and guttering and trying their very best to get mess everywhere and the bless them they managed both. It was too sunny to be inside but too hot to do anything that productive apart from just sitting looking at the veg growing.

Feeling rather smug with my veg growing efforts, I have decided its time to try a few new things. One of the big bonuses of growing my own veg is that the kids have started eating more vegetables. Partly because they do taste better but also the fact they picked the peas or pulled the carrots. So my next task is to get more fruit into them. The strawberries are proving a success. Even my son who declared he hates strawberries has been spotted munching them in the garden.

Seems fitting that on the first day of summer I am out in the wind and the rain rescuing tomato plants. I know as veg grower I am supposed to be happy with rain as its got far more nutrients than tap water…oh and cheaper too. But the downside to all this rain is that the peas have had such a growth spurt that have nearly broken free from there netting.

One of the side effects of being a new gardener, and getting old according to my daughter, is that I tend to get drawn to all the gardening programmes on TV. Monty and Alan are my new best friends. Not literally obviously as they don’t pop in for a cup of tea and natter, but I have got them sky plussed to watch when the kids are out to save them moaning.

According to my neighbours I am the rather revolutionary one in our terrace. I live in a terrace of ten houses where the ages are equally split between half of us not owning a bus pass whilst the other half have their bus passes. All the back gardens are fairly open with only waist high fences or hedges separating us. Not the most private of spaces but it does have a communal spirit when were all out in the gardens chatting over the fences.

Its one thing to have delinquent children, not that I have, but I seem to have 4 rather rebellious and undisciplined tomato plants.
My neighbour and I both planted our tomato seeds at the same time. Mr H being more than twice my age I know he is a lot more knowledgeable than me on all matters of veg growing. So when he re-potted his tomato plants, I duly followed.
