An Afternoon with Make Up
One of the things that spurred me to do beauty this month was a recent photo that I just looked so old. What I wanted to try to understand was as I get older is it a case of more makeup, different make up or am I doing the whole thing wrong. What exactly is beauty as you get older?
My afternoon with Julie taught me a lot.  Julie is a makeup artist and is passionate about mineral make up, so passionate she has her own range and website, Angel Face Online. I have never been shown how to put make up on nor had anyone put make up on me. Well not in a professional manor, I don’t think my daughters attempts when she was 3 years old counts.
I consider myself a ‘natural look’ sort of girl because one of the things I have never got to grips with successfully is art of applying foundation. Getting the wrong shade, wrong type and all over the carpet I can successfully do though. Then there is the complete faff of removing it all again each night. Mineral make up is now my new best friend.  If you have never used or seen mineral make up it mainly comes in a powder form. Angel Face mineral make up contains Oxides, mica and rice powder and that’s it. Its sweat and tear proof and doesn’t clog pores. The natural healing products in mineral make up make it beneficial to problem skin. It’s not heavy like a liquid foundation and if you’re a shade out it doesn’t matter so much as it works with your skin. It is rather clever as it only works where it needs to. Julie showed how to put it on and the trick isn’t powdering your face like a babies bum and talk or applying it like your glossing a door. The bit to get right is the correct brush and small circular motions when applying it.
Julie went on to do my full make up without me peeking in the mirror at each stage. Just like they do on the makeover programs. So how did I feel on my first make up make over? More importantly what did the two most important critics, my children, make to it?
I looked completely different. It was perfectly done and I did look gorgeous but the thing that struck me was I just didn’t look like me. I kept the makeup on for the rest of the day but I couldn’t get passed how unlike me I felt. I thought I would feel more confident, happier. But I didn’t feel like me so I wasn’t comfortable. Julie did an amazing job and her patience, as I kept asking what that is and what’s that for, was unlimited. Up till now I always envied women who wore full make up every day and secretly thought that was what I wanted. What I learnt thought, apart from a huge amount of techniques, was that I guess I am a natural girl at heart and will always will be as that’s what I feel most comfortable with and comfort equals happy.
As for my two critics? My daughter liked it though did keep looking at me when she thought I wasn’t noticing. She said I looked so different. My son simply asked why?
If you ever get the chance to have your makeup done by someone other than a 3 year old I would thoroughly recommend it. The techniques I learnt are invaluable when applying make up for a special occasion. Â Learning how different products work and what order to put them on too is invaluable. I may not be an everyday make up convert but I am defiantly at a better advantage when I do want to wear it.
