Long Distance Relationships with Stilettos
One of the things Donna is talking about this week is long distance relationships. She talks about other things too so do have a read of her latest article, Great Expectations.
One of the positives (and can be thought of as negative) of dating online is that you most probably won’t be dating someone who lives down the road. This can be a good thing as you get to meet a wider variety of dates. But there are down sides.
When you’re filling in your questionnaire on eHarmony its a good idea to have a realistic idea of the distance your willing to travel. It may be fun to have a date several towns away but consider if the date is successful. How will you fit in the travelling with your family commitments? It would be more difficult to meet up with out a lot of preplanning. You may even find your ideal date is actually hundreds of miles away or even countries. If you fall head over heels for someone miles away there will be geographic logistics to consider. Would you move to them, which would involve moving your children away from their other parent? Or would it be easier for them to move nearer to you? Would their work commitments accommodate the move?
I do think long distance relationships can work and have heard many stories where they do but be realistic on what you can afford (travelling) and what your personal family commitments can allow.
I had a few dates with a chap once who lived several miles away. Meeting up was sporadic and not without surprises. It also didn’t last very long. One day, which is actually the last day I saw him, he surprised me by calling in after finishing the show he was in. I was rather shocked but no more than my father who was visiting as I hadn’t mentioned I was seeing anyone as it was very early days. The most shocking thing being he had come straight from the show and thought it would be funny to stay in costume. He wasn’t in any run of the mill show, oh no, he was in a Rocky Horror show. Complete with stilettos and long curly wig.
