Life Goals: Getting Through The Bucket List

There are a lot of us out there who are daydreamers. We daydream about where the planes in the sky are flying off to. We daydream about being on the stage and singing to a large audience (NB: the fact we cannot sing does not matter). Bottom line is that we daydream. Nearly everyone though, daydreamer or not, has an ultimate daydream to end all daydreams. The Bucket List.

The Bucket List (capital letters for dramatic effect) is a list we want to complete before we kick the bucket. We get one life, we should live it the way we want to and push past the boundaries of our beginnings. No matter our status or bank balance, we all go through life, from the moment we are old enough to imagine and act out fairy stories, thinking of our dreams. What do we dream about? The best car. The best job that pays an amazing salary. The best house that has no stamp duty or Conveyancing Fees. We dream about the exotic holidays in far off lands that offer petting tigers and swimming with sharks. Most of us put together a full-on bucket list where we steadfastly tick off every single item with absolute satisfaction.

So what kinds of things can you put on your bucket list? Anything you please. Literally anything. Some examples of bucket list dreams have included:

  • Climbing Mount Everest and reaching the summit.
  • Living in another country for a year or more.
  • Tasting fried locusts in the back-street markets of Thailand.
  • Swimming with dolphins.
  • Going on a world cruise.

If you can think of it, you can aim for it. The bucket list doesn’t discriminate about your pay rate and ability to actually DO any of the things on it. For the most part, these daydreams are far out of reach for some people but these life goals can still be achievable. We base our achievements off our career goals, salaries, whether we have managed to marry the love of our lives by age thirty and whether we have children. Whether we manage to own property is also up there. The ultimate bucket list goal for most people is really a simple goal: to be happy. Happiness comes in many forms and if you get right to the point of kicking the bucket and you’re not happy, then it’s a sad situation to be in.

What if we changed our bucket lists to reflect goals that are within reach? Sure, scaling Everest and making it home in one piece may be a thrilling adventure, but what if you instead aimed to learn to drive. Aimed to master every recipe in your favourite cook book. Aimed to climb the ladder in the job you are in rather than the job hindsight told you to want. Our goals can be achievable if we pick the things that make us truly happy. You could swim with the sharks, but you could also get bitten in half. Perspective, right?
