The Garden Is My Outside Office
(And It’s the Best One I’ve Ever Had)
Once upon a time, my “office” was a desk squeezed into the corner of the living room, surrounded by laundry baskets and the gentle hum of the washing machine. Fast forward to now — and my office has fresh air, buzzing bees, and a view of the veg patch instead of spreadsheets.
That’s right. My garden is officially my outside office — and honestly? It’s the best one I’ve ever had.
Working from the Garden: More Than Just a Pretty View
On paper, it sounds a little whimsical. But working from the garden has become my secret weapon. It keeps me grounded (literally), sparks my creativity, and reminds me to breathe deeper and slower. There’s something magical about being surrounded by growing things when you’re trying to grow something yourself — whether that’s a business, a new idea, or just a better mindset.
Even the birds seem to cheer me on. (Though the pigeons are a bit judgy, if I’m honest.)
When the Weather Doesn’t Play Nice
Of course, this is the UK. The sun has commitment issues, and rain is basically a national personality trait. So when the skies are grey or the wind picks up my sketchbook and flings it into the lavender, I retreat to my inside office.
I took over one of the spare rooms and turned it into my own creative sanctuary. It’s filled with all my art supplies — always ready to go when inspiration strikes, no unpacking required. The space is warm, cosy, and unapologetically me — fairy lights, mugs of tea, joyful clutter, and things that make me smile. It’s where I draw, dream, and hide from the rain.
A Few Perks of the Garden (and Indoor) Office Life
- Natural light therapy – when it’s sunny, the garden delivers; when it’s not, I have twinkly lights and warm lamps indoors.
- Less stress – plants outside and comfort inside = a calm mind.
- Creative spark – I do my best drawing surrounded by either petals or paints.
- Built-in breaks – pottering in the garden or pacing to the kettle counts as movement, right?
You Don’t Need a Grand Garden or Giant Room
Even if you’ve just got a balcony or a corner of a room, you can still carve out a little sanctuary. A fold-up chair and a pot of lavender can become a garden haven. A cosy desk and a few favourite bits can become your creative nook. It doesn’t have to be big or fancy — it just needs to feel like yours.
